1917 Timeline ______________________________________

February 3rd The US grain ship “Housatonic” was sunk by a U-boat and Wilson severed diplomatic ties with Germany
April 6th America declared war on Germany
July 31st The battle of Passchendaele commenced in Belgium. It is occasionally called the third battle of Ypres. The attack of Pilckem Ridge began at 3:50 a.m. in low cloud and heavy rain fell during the afternoon. Mud became a significant factor in the battle.
November 6th Britain launched a major offensive on the Western Front and captured Passchendaele. Lenin took power in Russia with the Bolsheviks in charge of Moscow and Petrograd but not much else
November 10th The Canadian Corps launched a final action of Passchendaele which ended the campaign apart from a night attack at Passchendaele on 1/2 December and an attack on the Polderhoek Spur on 2 December
December 5th An armistice was signed between Germany and Russia
