Joseph William was born in Yarm in 1884 and appears to be known by his second name.

In 1881 his father Cuthbert Hood, a stonemason from Sedgefield was living at 23 West Row, Stockton with his wife Sarah Elizabeth nee Knox from Middlesbrough and sons John Thomas aged 2 and Cuthbert that had just been born but would not live beyond 3.

The family then moved to Yarm. In 1886 they had another son also whilst living in Yarm and called him Cuthbert.
In 1891 the family was living at 2 Owen Street, Murton and comprised mother and father, John Thomas now 13, William aged 7, Cuthbert aged 5, Margaret Ann born in Murton aged 2 and a boarder John Armstrong aged 54. a fellow mason.
1901 saw the family move to a three roomed house in Front Street, Sedgefield, They had been joined by Annie aged 10 and Robert aged 7. John Thomas had married Ruth Cook in 1898 and was living in Linthorpe.

William enlisted as a full time soldier in the 1st Yorkshire Regiment ((Alexandra, Princes of Wales' Own) at Richmond and was stationed at Ferryhill. His number indicates he joined in 1907. At the beginning of ww1 the 1st Yorkshires were stationed at Bariam, Punjab and remained in India throughout the war.
William died on 4 January 1916 and he is burried at Rawalpindi war Cemetery, Punjab, Pakistan. Plot: 3. C. 15.
