The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Died of wounds 21 Jul 1916. Only son of William Smith, tailor and Annie his wife of High St, Yarm. He was widely respected in the town and had taken a deep interest in the Terriers as well as the Miniature Rifle Club in which he won several trophies. Shortly before the war started he had joined an Australian Liner and was in that country when war was declared. He joined the 2nd Aus Inf and went to Gallipoli where he was wounded in the foot. He recovered from his wounds in Ghezirah Hospital, Cairo and had landed in France just two months before his death. Boulogne Eastern Cem, France

Yarm1914 believe that Edward was born in 1887 in Yarm and lived in a High Church Wynd with his parents William 26 a tailor from Aisalby and Annie 27 from Eston or Lazenby, his sister Beatrice was 6. By 1891 Edward had been joined by Frank aged 2 and Annie aged 1. By 1901 Beatrice had learned to become a dressmaker. The family poved to the High Sreet. By 1911 Beatrice had moved out, Edward had become a tailor and his brother Frank had become a brick maker. In 1914 Edward landed at Kensington, New South Wales and signed up for the 2nd battalion of the 1st Infantry on 8 September 1914. He was a steward at the time and gave William Smith of High Street Yarm as his next of kin.
