Women of the Great War - 7.00pm 13 September 2014

Yarm Parish Church, West Street, Yarm

What an evening! There was something for everyone, humour, sadness and revelation. History Wardrobe gave a professional presentation about the contribution women made to the war effort through the medium of clothes. They touched on the work in factories and railways. The nursing contribution and lives lost and the inequalities that were gradually being addressed.

Helen Bailey and Jim Clements mirrored the story through the songs and compositions of the time, taking us to the depths of despair in the trenches with Ivor Gurney as he composed his music through to the joy at the end of hostilities.

Ian Bannister from the Royal British Legion gave a fascinating short talk on the history of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance - it could have easily been the laurel leaf.
